Gerner arrived in Australia January 1957.
He picked grapes at Daretonnear Mildura Victoria for 3 months. Then he bought a Volkswwagen and went to a sheep station at Dunkfield in Victoria, where he stayed for 12 months. The next year he worked at a water irrigation plant at Werribee. He then spent a year working as a gardener on a sheep property at Narreen.
Moving on from Victoria to South Australia he worked in Adelaide at Tolley´s Wines in the vineyard.

Gerner met Josephine Alice Back in July 1961 and they married on the 20th January 1962 moving to a vineyard in July 1962. As well as working on the property he worked for 7 years at Seppelts winery.
Johann Gerner was born on the 20th March 1965 and two years later Ingrid Alice on the 2nd May 1967.
In april 1979 Gerner and Josie went to  Denmark on a holiday.
Ingrid married Chris Rose on the 26th January 1985. They have 3 children, Robert James 6th May 1985, Tyson Christopher 9th May 1987 and Christy-Lee Alice 22nd April 1994.
Johann married on the 28th October 1989 and has a daughter Kayla Jade 30th July 1991.
After 26½ years at Nuriootpa Josie and Gerner bought a house at Christiese Beach where they still enjoying the beach and retirement.
